Halloween Costume Contest: Entries Now Open!

Happy almost October! Jellyneo's Twentieth Annual Halloween Costume Contest is now open for entries! We wanted to give you plenty of time to prepare your costumes, so you have from now until October 7th at 11:59PM NST to submit your pet dressed up for Halloween.

We have no limit on the number of entries we will accept into round one, so we will be accepting as many entries as we can for round one of voting. (Barring any rules violations of course, and we also won't be accepting 10 vampires, so be creative!) 75 of the top rated pets from round one will move on to round two, and from there the top 30 will compete for a gold trophy.

For a full list of rules and dates, please see our Costume Contest page. And then start dressing up your pet! (We've made a few rules changes and clarifications from last year.)

As a warning to everyone planning on submitting: like we said above, we will only be accepting, at the most, 1-2 variations of a particular costume. If you'd like a better chance of getting in, make a unique, but still recognizable, costume! Venturing off the "beaten path" has worked well in past contests—think Neopian characters, pop culture references, and more.

(Before submitting, be sure to check out the rules!)

Let's goooo!! Please tell me the staff contest is coming back too, that was fun. Also, 20th contest already??

Regarding the "rule changes" mentioned above, here's a change log of what's different:

- In general, cleaned up the language and made things a little more consistently worded.

- Added: The costume, particularly your description of the costume, must be appropriate for the Neoboards and follow all Neopets rules.

- Added: By extension, this also means no Pet Styles or full-body overlays (like Black Kadoatie Wearable or Summer Fun Usuki Wearable) are allowed.

- Added: If you enter a basic costume (like "Ghost" or "Jhudora"), it may be rejected if we've already received too many similar entries.

- Reworked rules around copying past winners: (a) if your pet won before, you cannot use the same costume, and (b) in regards to all past winners, you may not mimic the costumes of last year's top 3 winners.

- Added: new "Entry Suggestions" section to give some tips on what we've seen do well (and not well) in the past 19 contests.

We have also implemented a brand new basic rules check at time of entry that will tell you immediately if your Neopets' costume is breaking any of our basic rules, like >5 NC items, not enough NP items, or has a Pet Style applied. We're hoping this immediate feedback will be better than waiting for one of our staff members to manually have to reject your entry.

Very excited to see what you all come up with this year! May the best costume win!

@bonju: Yes, Staff Category will be returning this year!
by dave on September 23, 2026 9:08 AM NST JN Staff
Oops! Your entry appears to break a few of our contest rules:
More than 5 Neocash items are not allowed.

Pretty sure my pet is only wearing 5 NC items

@bonju Give it another shot.

Success! Your entry has been saved!
Yay thanks!

Best of luck everyone, super excited to see the entries

Quick rules question. I understand no body overlays are allowed, but body paints are allowed such as Candy Corn Body Paint right?
by heznarrt on September 23, 2026 12:55 PM NST
@heznarrt yes as those don't "alter" the look of your actual pet as in turn it into a petpet or such - if that makes sense
by isabellone on September 23, 2026 1:12 PM NST
"Avoid entering a "premade" outfit, such as outfits released for Pet Days" thank you for that, I hope that reduces the amount of them. It's not a very creative one if it's just basically an already existing costume!

As for the rule about the description having to be neoboards-appropriate, uhh were there any that weren't, before? xD Or do you mean you can't dress up your pet as a grape and describe it?
by amethyst43217 on September 23, 2026 4:13 PM NST
@heznarrt: Yes body paints are fine. As isabellone said, we're only after items that change your Neopet from being a Neopet into say, an Usuki or a petpet. Despite wearable innovation in the past 20 years, we've stuck to the idea that we want to see your Neopet with clothing on and still be able to tell it's a Neopet.

@amethyst43217: Let's just say we wanted a formal rule against explicit costumes this year. We're not banning grapes or Uncle Scrooge.

I'm not participating this year
by kacheekfan96 on September 23, 2026 5:48 PM NST
glad to see these (imo much needed) rules changes! it's been a bummer in the past seeing several full pet day costumes breeze through the rounds while costumes that had more effort put into them fall behind..
by ashtonavocado on September 24, 2026 3:16 AM NST
@dave: "we've stuck to the idea that we want to see your Neopet with clothing on and still be able to tell it's a Neopet"

Does that mean, if I follow all the rules but you can't tell it's a Neopet, the entry won't be accepted?
by stormmonarch on September 24, 2026 4:20 AM NST
This is my second time participating in the Halloween Costume Contest, and I came up with a really good one.
by jessalynn on September 24, 2026 7:43 AM NST
@stormmonarch we're really just referring to the recent phenomenon of wearables that replace your Neopet entirely with something else. Dave gave two examples in his earlier, longer comment.
by kenny on September 24, 2026 6:47 PM NST JN Staff
@kenny: thank you.
by stormmonarch on September 24, 2026 7:49 PM NST
I honestly don't know what to do this year lol
by sliced_ramen on September 24, 2026 9:55 PM NST
I'm celebrating Final Fantasy 9's 25th anniversary with mine.
Good thing I've had a certain fixation on the brain for literal months now!
by overboss on September 25, 2026 8:15 PM NST
I am going to give it a go again this year! Quick Question: Does my pet have to stay in character for the whole compettion period? Or can I change her customisation after I entered her?
by spabl on September 27, 2026 12:00 AM NST
Can we have zero NeoCash items? Instead all NeoPoints? If so is there a limit to NeoPoint items?
by clevertinker on September 28, 2026 8:57 AM NST
@spabi You don't have to leave the costume on your pet for the entirety of the competition. Just when you submit the pet, and it's probably best to keep it on until your costume gets approved.

@clevertinker You absolutely can do a costume with 0 Neocash items. There is no limit on Neopoint items for this, just 5 Neocash items.
by watmelmochi on September 29, 2026 7:15 AM NST
Thanks Watmelmochi!!!
by spabl on September 29, 2026 7:22 AM NST
Woo!!!! My Grundo got accepted into the costume contest! I hope he does well this year I tried really hard with this one.
by heznarrt on September 30, 2026 5:54 PM NST
How do you know when an entry is approved or declined?
